    STORIA DELLA CANZONE:
    la musica venne scritta nel 1894 da Guy Sculls e nel 1908 fu aggiunto del testo da Meade Minnigerode e George S. Pomeroy, basandosi su un poema di Rudyord Kipling intitolato “Gentlemen Rankers”.
    All’Università di Yale, Minnigerode e Pomeroy erano membri della “Whiffenpoof Society” e questa canzone ne divenne l’inno in quanto eseguita dal quartetto collegiale The Whiffenpoofs che si esibivano al Mory’s Temple Bar, il locale più noto della Yale University.
    Il neologismo “Whiffenpoof” fu coniato dal commediografo Joseph Cawthorne e compare in una battuta della sua commedia “Little Nemo”, in cui si racconta la cattura di un “Whiffenpoof Fish”. Fu poi Goat Fowler, affascinato dall’insolita parola, a proporla come appellativo del famoso quartetto.
    Il belare è ricollegato al testo (We’re poor little lambs who have lost our way, We’re little black sheep who have gone astray).
    Inoltre nel film "La principessa di Bali" c’è Bing Crosby che canta la canzone mentre si trova in un gregge di pecore.
    Il brano venne registrato per la prima volta a livello commerciale da Rudy Vallee nel 1937 (Bluebird 7135).
    Bing Crosby col Fred Waring’s Glee Club raggiunse il settimo posto in classifica nel 1947 (Decca 23990) e vendette oltre un milione di copie.
    Altre registrazioni furono quelle di Robert Merrill nel 1947 (RCA 1313) e di Bob Crewe nel 1960 (Warert 519).
    La canzone viene eseguita anche nei film “Winged victory” del 1944 e “Riding high” del 1950.
